Mumbai, June 26: Betting and gambling, popularly known as Satta Matka or Matka King in India, are banned under the Public Gambling Act, 1867. While lottery games are legal in many states, Satta Matka games are considered illegal in the majority of states across the country. In March this year, the government had issued an advisory highlighting prohibition of advertising and promotion of betting and gambling. Despite this, online betting platforms and apps offer betting and gambling directly or under the guise of gaming. It has now come to light that betting platforms and apps are allegedly using various state government websites to promote their illegal activities including Satta Matka games. It is suspected that these government may have been hacked to promote Satta Matka related content. The affected pages were later deleted.
LatestLY has found content promoting Satta Matka games on the official websites of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Bihar, Kerala and other state governments. While majority of the pages with Satta Matka or Gold Star Matka details have been deleted, some are still active or redirect users to betting platforms or apps. Also, it has come to notice that Satta Matka or Golden Star Matka related content is pushed on state government websites frequently and in some cases on daily basis. LatestLY used Google Cache in order to access now-deleted web pages from different state government websites where Satta Matka related content was published. Google Cache results confirm that these pages were live on the official domains on the state government websites. If people behind Satta Bazar activities have accessed to government and public data available on these websites needs to be investigated too. Some of these pages redirect users to download apps offering betting games. It is not clear if those apps are genuine or a ploy be scammers to dupe people.
