Rajagopal was admitted to a private hospital after he surrendered before the Madras High Court last week. Rajagopal was convicted last month for the murder of an employee in 2001. Rajagopal was the son of a low-caste onion trader in a Tamil Nadu and opened his first restaurant in 1981. From then, he opened restaurants across India and had 80 outlets in other parts of the world including the United States, the Gulf, Europe and Australia.
In 2004, Rajagopal was found guilty of murdering Prince Santhakumar to marry his wife Jeevajothi and was sentenced to 10 years. After an appeal, the sentence increased to life. The Supreme Court in March this year upheld the conviction and sentence and asked him to surrender on July 7.
