Chandigarh, October 11: A Hisar court on Thursday convicted self-styled godman Sant Rampal in two murder cases. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced by the court next week. Rampal has been posted in jail since November 2014 and will continue to stay in jail now that he has been convicted in both cases.

Rampal, along with 14 others, was put on trial in a case dating back to November 2014. The hearing was completed on Wednesday, with the sessions court stating that the judgement would be announced on October 11.

Hisar Superintendent of Police Shiv Charan had said that the administration had made elaborate arrangements in view of any possible outcome. The supporters of Rampal would not be allowed to vitiate the state of law and order if the verdict is issued against the godman, he said.

"Ahead ofthe verdict (murder case) on self-styled godman Rampal we have taken adequate measures to maintain law and order. Section 144 has been imposed across Hisar district. Around 2000 police personnel have been deployed," Ashok Kumar Meena, District Collector had also said.

On August 29 last year, Rampal was acquitted in two major cases by the Hisar court. The godman, who was accused of illegally confining devotees in his ashram in November 2014, along with rioting with the police in the same period, was relieved of the twin charge.
