Samjhauta Express Services Resume From Tomorrow After India and Pakistan Agree to Operationalise Train
The train will start running from the Indian side on Sunday, while on the Pakistan side it will leave Lahore on Monday on its return journey.
New Delhi, March 2: A day after the homecoming of Indian Air Force's pilot Abhinandan Varthaman, India and Pakistan agreed to resume services of the Samjhauta Express. According to railway officials, Samjhauta Express will leave India for Pakistan tomorrow. The train will start running from the Indian side on Sunday, while on the Pakistan side it will leave Lahore on Monday on its return journey.
While Pakistan had cancelled services of the Samjhauta Express right after an air strike by the Indian Air Force, India cancelled the operations of the train on February 28. The two neighbours have now agreed to operationalise services at their ends, a senior railway official told PTI. On the Indian side, Samjhauta Express train runs from Delhi to Attari and from Lahore to Wagah on the Pakistan side.
Several Pakistani nationals stranded in India due to the suspension of the Samjhauta Express by the Pakistani authorities. On Friday, the Punjab Police distributed eatables to stranded Pakistanis. Informed sources said that 40-50 Pakistani passengers were stranded at the Attari railway station and were waiting for the train service to resume so that they could travel back to their country.
Punjab Police personnel, including women police, distributed food to the stranded passengers. The authorities later made arrangements to enable the stranded passengers to cross the International Border through the Attari-Wagah joint check-post.
