Chandigarh, January 6: In a shocking incident, a woman who underwent a sex change surgery to marry her school friend is now in trouble as the wife doesn’t want to be with him anymore. The 21-year-old Haryana woman underwent the surgery in 2017 to marry her friend, now wife, as they thought their families will not agree for same-sex marriage. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the husband has filed a complaint with police that he was not allowed to meet his wife as her parents have confined her at their house. During interrogation by the Police, the husband stated that he fell in love with the girl when they were in school and they wanted to marry each other. He said as the families would not be ready, they decided that one of them needs to change their sex if they wanted to be together. A family member of the husband was quoted in the report saying that one of the girls (now the husband), underwent the surgery around a year ago from Delhi, which cost them Rs 10 lakh. The kin said that they had borrowed money from people for the surgery. The couple later got married at a Delhi temple in October 2017. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalises homosexuality.
According to details by the Police, it appeared that the wife was not able to convince her parents for the marriage. The police thought they would call the families for counselling. Charkhi Dadri superintendent of police (SP) Smiti Chaudhary said when the families came to her, the girl clearly refused to go to her husband’s home. Chaudhary said since she is an adult, she has right to make the decision. However, the husband’s family has told the police that they will look for legal options to get them together.
