Sahyadri Express Train Accident Averted on Mumbai-Pune Route After CCTV Captures Boulder Lying on Railway Track

Mumbai, June 14: The Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras installed in a hilly section of Mumbai-Pune railway route for monitoring the situation during monsoon proved a lifesaver on Thursday night. The CCTV footage captured boulder falling on tracks following which train was stopped avoiding any major accident. According to the CCTV footage, a huge boulder fell on tracks near Lonavala at 8:15 pm, due to which Mumbai-Kolhapur Sahyadri Express was delayed for over two hours. "The monitoring staff not only alerted higher authorities but also ensured that power supply to the overhead equipment was switched off and oncoming trains were stopped well in time," said Sunil Udasi, Chief Spokesperson, Central Railway. The train was reversed to Thakurwadi station and the service was resumed towards Kolhapur at 10:30 pm. The commuters were provided drinking water at Thakurwadi and snacks when the train reached Lonavala at 11 pm. The boulder was 2.2 meters wide, 2.3 meters long, and 1.6 meters high, which could have caused serious damage to the train.

Earlier in a similar incident, a major mishap was averted after a special train was halted in Maharashtra's Manmad after one of its wheels was found damage. After noticing it, the last two coaches of the train were detached for repair and allowed to proceed. The train was en route to Mumbai from Bihar's Barauni.
