Nilakkal, October 26: Nearly 2,016 people have been arrested till now by the Kerala Police for the Sabarimala violence. Those arrested had protested against the Supreme Court's decision of allowing women aged between 10 and 50 years from entering the historic Sabarimala Shrine. Meanwhile, 452 cases have been registered against the protestors. In the historic judgment on September 28, 2018, the top court had pronounced the verdict by 4:1 majority.
Most of the people arrested were from Pathanamthitta - the district where the temple is located. Many have also been arrested from Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam. Several women journalists as well as those women who tried to enter the Sabarimala Temple were blocked and even assaulted by protesters earlier last week. Around 19 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to review its order on Sabarimala Shrine allowing women of all ages. The apex court has agreed to consider the petition seeking review of its decision on Ayyappa shrine on November 13 at 3 pm. This comes after the gates of the shrine were open for the first time after the court's verdict but due to heavy protest, no women were not allowed to enter the temple. Earlier on October 19, Hyderabad based Journalist Kavitha Jakkal and activist Rehana Fathima tried and failed to enter the Sabarimala Temple. They were just a few metres away from the temple gates but had to stop after the head priest warned them that he will stop all the rituals and close the gates of the temple. After the Police authorities explained them the whole matter, both of them agreed to return.
