RV Janakiraman, DMK Leader and Former Chief Minister of Puducherry, Passes Away at 79

Janakirman died in the early hours on Monday after a prolonged illness.

Puducherry, June 10: RV Janakiraman, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and former Chief Minister of Puducherry passed away on Monday at the age of 79. Janakiraman, whose condition was said to be critical since the last few days, breathed his last in Puducherry. Senior party leaders of the DMK, including Member of Parliament Kanimozhi, visited him at the hospital in the last two days.

Janakiraman was the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Pondicherry (Puducherry). He was elected from Nellithope assembly constituency and served from May 26, 1996 to March 18, 2000.

Janakirman died in the early hours on Monday after a prolonged illness. Reports inform that he breathed last at 0300 hrs in a private hospital in Puducherry.

Earlier in the day, veteran actor Girish Karnad passed away at the age of 81 at his residence on Lavelle road in Bengaluru. Apart from his brilliant acting, he was also internationally known as a playwright and a highly talented film-maker.
