New Delhi, October 4: Assam Police and Moreh Police handed over seven Rohingya refugees to Myanmar authorities earlier today at Indo-Myanmar friendship gate no 2. Deportation formalities were completed once the refugees were handed over. The refugees had been staying in the Indian jail since 2012 for illegally entering the country. The Rohingya refugees are from Rakhine and they flew from Myanmar after the violence broke out against the minority. Earlier, advocate Prashant Bhushan had mentioned the matter for urgent hearing before with Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
Bhushan said that deporting the refugees could be risky because there was a risk of prosecution and even death. But Yesterday, the Supreme Court cleared the deck by saying that Myanmar had issued a certificate of identity to the seven Rohingyas along with one month visa to facilitate their deportation. The UN rapporteur, Tendayi Achiume said that India has breached International legal obligations by returning the refugees to possible harm.
Earlier, a PIL was filed by two Immigrants challenging the Centre's decision of deporting 40,000 refugees who came to India after escaping Myanmar due to the violence and also alleged discrimination against the community.
