Vizag, May 22: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday successfully launched the RISAT-2B (Radar Imaging Satellite-2B), which is set to enhance India's surveillance capabilities. Among fields where the satellite's inputs would be put to application include agriculture, forestry and disaster management support, along with the foiling of infiltration bid from across the border. RISAT-2B: Everything to Know About The Radar Imaging Satellite Launch
- The satellite was blasted off into the space using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C46) at 5:30am in the morning, following a 25-hour countdown which began on Tuesday.
- The satellite was sent into the space from first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. It was the 48th mission of ISRO and has been described as "perfect" by the scientists involved.
- The satellite, weighing nearly 615-kg, would replace the existing RISAT-2. The latter is being used for surveillance purpose by India since 2009.
- Chairman K Sivan had earlier described the mission as a "very, very important" one for the country. The satellite would also be used for military surveillance, ISRO officials said.
- The RISAT-2B is equipped with a synthetic aperture radar that can take pictures of the earth during day and night, and also under cloudy conditions.
- The mission life of the satellite is 5 years.
