Earlier in the day, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the government has reportedly made the first arrest. Meanwhile, the three main accused, identified by the SIT yesterday, are yet to be held. The person arrested today has been identified as Deendayal. He is accused of renting the place where the teenager was gang-raped. The SIT has taken him into custody for interrogation.
Earlier in the day, the victim's mother spoke to news agency ANI, claiming that some officials had approached her on Saturday with compensatory cheques. "I am returning it today, as we want justice and not money. It has now been 5 days and none of the accused has been arrested till now," she said.
The 19-year-old victim was kidnapped by three men who arrived in a car and was taken to a secluded place where she was gang-raped after being offered a drink laced with sedatives, the complainant had alleged. The accused later left her near a bus stop in Kanina the same day. Opposition parties demanded the resignation of the chief minister on moral grounds. The parties blamed the state government for not being able to provide security to girls. The victim was also felicitated by the President of India after being brilliant in academics and topping the CBSE board exam.
