New Delhi, February 4: The Supreme Court has to address a number of PILs (Public Interest Litigations) on a daily basis. However, many PIL are filed just for the sake of it and lacks any substance. A similar PIL was filed in the Supreme court, which the Court dismissed calling it a "ridiculous PIL." The subject of the PIL was: Ban all red coloured dresses across India. Supreme Court Slaps Rs 50,000 Fine on Lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma Over ‘Baseless’ PIL Against Arun Jaitley.

The bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi said that, "It is a ridiculous PIL." The CJI led bench's observation on the PIL is absolutely correct considering the number of serious cases and hearings pending with the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Declines Urgent Hearing of PIL Seeking Linking of Voter ID Cards with Aadhaar.

PIL is a rule of law declared by the courts of record. However, the person (or entity) filing the petition must prove to the satisfaction of the court that the petition is being filed for the public interest and not as a frivolous litigation for pecuniary gain.

This is not the first time that such PILs have been filed in the courts. Earlier, there have been PILs filed for cases as diverse as demanding a pictorial warning on liquor bottles akin to cigarettes. Then there was the PIL to Ban MPs and MLAs to practise as lawyers. Last year, there was also a PIL seeking ban on burning of effigies of Ravana on Dussehra.
