Mumbai, September 13: A sessions court in Tripura's Sepahijala district recently convicted a man and awarded him life imprisonment for raping his mother. The 24-year-old accused, a resident of Takarjala, was awarded rigorous life imprisonment for raping his mother in an inebriated condition. The alleged incident took place at their home on May 2 last year. The accused was convicted by the sessions court of Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district.

According to a report in the Times of India, the accused had allegedly raped his mother in the absence of his father. The incident occurred when the accused returned home early morning from a local festival. An officer privy to the case said that as the woman was alone, the accused raped her and fled away. The incident came to light after three days when the woman reported the incident to police. Following this, she lodged a rape case against her son. Acting on the woman's complaint, the police immediately arrested the accused. Post this, the court allowed a custodial trial, considering the incident as a rarest of rare crimes.

The exhaustive investigation culminated with the presentation of strong evidence and the testimonies of 20 witnesses. Following this, Bishal Gour, additional sessions judge, deemed the son guilty of rape under Section 376(2)(F) of the India Penal Code. After the court's order, Goutam Giri, an additional public prosecutor, said that the case could be the first instance in the state's history where a son committed a heinous act on his mother.
