Mumbai, April 8: The family members of Vadivelu Chintambi Devendra, who allegedly raped and murdered a 9-year-old girl in Juhu, were arrested on Monday for threatening police officials and preventing them from discharging duty. The investigating officers had reached Devendra's home to conduct a panchnama, after he confessed of killing and raping the minor.
The officials were, however, threatened with rods and sticks by the family members, who prevented from entering inside. The police team returned and registered an FIR, booking them under Sections 506 (II) (criminal intimidation), 341 (wrongful restraint), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The four family members who have been arrested are: Muskan Vadevali (wife, 20), Chelmuttu Devendra (brother, 36), Banu Devendra (sister-in-law, 33) and Ramai Devendra (mother, 55).
Devendra was arrested on Saturday, a day after he allegedly raped the 9-year-old child, strangulated her to death, and dumped the body in a gutter close to his house.
A police inquiry has revealed that the girl was kidnapped by Devendra near her house at around 7:30pm. He hid her in his house, where the accused murdered her after the sexual assault.
Autopsy report of the girl's body has confirmed rape. Based on the post-mortem findings, the police have invoked section 377 (unnatural offences) in the FIR against Devendra.
The accused has confessed to his crime, said an official privy to the probe, adding that Devendra is a serial offender. He was earlier jailed for five years after a court in 2013 convicted him of raping a 5-year-old girl.
