New Delhi, January 31: Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning him over his claim that in cases of rape, executions are happening "within 7 days". Maliwal accused Modi of "lying before the nation" on the crucial issue of women's security.
In the letter, Maliwal claimed that the Centre had passed a law mandating capital punishment for rape only in April 2018 -- after completing four years in power. Despite the law being in place, she added, the pace of convictions has been slow, and that of executions being even slower. 'Sex Between Live-in Partners With Mutual Consent Not Rape if Man Breaks Marriage Promise'.
Continuing her tirade, Maliwal said that the Prime Minister should focus on measures which could guarantee justice to the victims, rather than making hollow claims in run-up to the elections. The step towards preventing heinous crimes like rape would┬аbe initiated with adequate recruitment in the police force, creating accountability and setting up fast-track courts.

Modi, while addressing the New India Youth Conclave in Surat on Wednesday, said the approach of his government towards combating the menace of rape is in stark difference to the alleged lackadaisical approach shown by his predecessors.

"There used to be rapes in this country earlier too, it is a shame that we still hear about such cases. Now, culprits are hanged within 3 days, 7 days, 11 days and a month. Steps are being taken continuously to get daughters justice & results are evident," he said.
