New Delhi, May 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted the whole country on the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramzan, also known as Ramadan. The Prime Minister hoped that this month brings the spirit of harmony, happiness and brotherhood to the society. During this festival, Muslims all over the world will observe fast for a month and offer special prayers to Allah. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee also wished the Muslim community on the occasion of Ramzan. "The Holy month of #Ramzan has begun. My best wishes to all my brothers and sisters who will be fasting for a month," she said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, involves rigorous (without water) fasting for 30 days. During this month, Muslims do not consume food and water from dawn to dusk. They eat sehri and break their meal with Iftar in the evening. The festival will end on Eid ul-Fitr will be on the first week of June.
