New Delhi, October 31: The Patiala House Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to suspended Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Deputy Superintendent of Police Devender Kumar in a bribery case allegedly involving agency's Special Director Rakesh Asthana. The bail granted bail to Kumar on furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety in the like amount.

Kumar was arrested last week on charges of fabricating a statement of a witness while probing allegations against meat exporter Moin Qureshi and was remanded to CBI custody till October 30. Kumar allegedly signed a 'fabricated statement' of Satish Sana, saying it was recorded on September 26. The CBI, however, claimed Sana was not present in Delhi on the mentioned date. Under PM Narendra Modi, CBI is a Weapon of Political Vendetta: Rahul Gandhi.

According to the CBI, Kumar fabricated the statement to corroborate baseless allegations made by Rakesh Asthana against CBI director Alok Kumar Verma to CVC. Kumar is said to be a close aide of Asthana. Asthana, a 1984-batch IPS officer of Gujarat cadre, is accused of accepting a bribe of Rs 2 crore from a Sana, in a bid to "wreck" the investigation.

The case was being examined by a special investigation team (SIT) headed by Asthana. The CBI alleged that bribes were taken at least five times between December 2017 and October this year.
