New Delhi, November 25: Days after the furore over the new dress of Rajya Sabha marshals that resembled those worn by defence personnel, the marshals on Monday switched back to ethnic bandhgala suits. The turban was, however, remained missing. The marshals dropped their decorated peaked caps last week but continued appearing in a bluish military-like uniform. However, they gave up the new uniform and wore traditional bandhgalas.

On November 18, the marshals had appeared in the military-like dress standing alongside the Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on the first day of the 250th session of the Rajya Sabha. The new uniform looked more like those worn by the military personnel. It included a cap giving the look of a police or military officer. Many of the members of the House were surprised to see the marshals in military-like uniform. Rajya Sabha Marshals' New Uniform Stokes Row; Former Indian Army Chief Gen VP Malik Terms it 'Illegal & Security Hazard', Other Former Personnel Back Him.

Besides some of the members in the House, a few retired army officers had also expressed reservation over the new uniform. Former Army chief General Ved Prakash Malik called the attire illegal and a security hazard. Following protests from some quarters over the military-like uniform for marshals, Chairman Naidu had asked the House Secretariat to review the new dress code.

"The secretariat of Rajya Sabha after considering the various suggestions have come out with new dress code for marshals. But we have received some observations from some political as well as some well-meaning people. So I have decided to ask the secretariat to revisit the same," Naidu had said. Amid the controversy, white uniforms, resembling those of Navy officers, have been decided for marshals for the summer season.
