Ludhiana, December 25: Punjab police arrested one person for vandalising Rajiv Gandhi statue in Ludhiana today. An FIR was registered against two accused in connection with the case. Earlier on Tuesday, black paint was sprayed on a statue of former PM Rajiv Gandhi at the Salem Tabri area in Ludhiana. As per the police, the whole incident took place in front of a large number of people.

Punjab Chief Minister accused Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supporters of the vandalising a statue of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Chief Minister also sought an apology from the SAD for this act. Later, the statue was later cleaned by workers of the Ludhiana Congress and a complaint was filed by them. Taking cognisance of the matter, CM Singh directed the police department to look into the issue seriously and take action against those who are responsible for it.

Condemning the act, the CM took to Twitter and wrote, “Strongly condemn vandalisation of Rajiv Gandhi's statue by @Akali_Dal_ workers in Ludhiana. Have asked Police to identify the guilty & take strict action. @officeofssbadal should apologise to people of Punjab for this obnoxious act.”

However, the party denied such reports. Meanwhile,  speaker of the Delhi assembly, Ram Niwas Goel claimed that the resolution which was passed in the house did not have any mention about Rajiv Gandhi.
