Barmer, June 13: In a shocking incident from Rajasthan’s Barmer district, a man killed his wife over suspicions that she was “talking to spirits” using her phone. Early Wednesday morning, Chunnilal attacked his wife Jiyo Devi (40) with an axe, resulting in her death. The couple's 17-year-old daughter, Sumitra, attempted to intervene but was also injured in the attack.
According to a report in TOI, the incident occurred around 2:30 am when Chunnilal woke up and assaulted his wife. Preliminary investigations indicate that Chunnilal harbored delusions about his wife using her phone to communicate with spirits. The family's neighbors, alerted by the screams, rushed to the house and found Jiyo Devi and Sumitra severely injured. They immediately transported them to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced Jiyo Devi dead upon arrival. Sumitra received first aid and was discharged after treatment. The police reported that Chunnilal, Jiyo Devi, and their four children had dinner together on Tuesday night before going to bed. Chunnilal's attack on his wife occurred a few hours later, and neighbors called the police around 3 am.
Dhorimanna SHO Manak Ram Vishnoi said that the accused attacked his wife, Jeeyo Devi, on her neck with an axe. “On hearing the screams of her mother, Sumitra (17) woke up and tried to rescue her but Sumitra was also injured in the attack,” said Vishnoi.
Both mother and daughter were rushed to a hospital, where Jeeyo Devi was declared dead. Sumitra was discharged after first-aid.
Following Sumitra's complaint, the police filed a case and arrested Chunnilal on charges of murder. Jiyo Devi's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the investigation is ongoing.
