Rains Wreak Havoc in Uttarakhand, 7 Killed; NDRF Teams Deployed
NDRF has pre-positioned its rescue and relief teams in the vulnerable areas of flood prone states across the country.
Dehradun, July 11: Torrential rains have wreaked havoc in Uttarakhand, with at least seven deaths being reported so far. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed across most hill districts to evacuate the locals.
Four deaths were reported in Dehradun district after a hillside building in Shastri Nagar collapsed. Around a dozen others are reported to be injured, with two critical. Two were killed after getting drowned in the overflowing Sheetla river at Charba village.
NDRF has pre-positioned its rescue and relief teams in the vulnerable areas of flood prone regions across the state. A total of 36 rescue and relief teams of NDRF comprising of over 300 responders are deployed in 47 locations to face the challenges arising due to floods.
The state meteorological department has predicted extreme rainfall in 45 vulnerable parts of Uttarakhand till Friday. The intensity of rains, however, would begin to wane in capital Dehradun and adjoining regions, the weather department claimed.
Bageshwar and Pithoragarh are the two most affected districts in the current spell of rainfall. The prime rivers of the state - Kali, Gori, Suang and Saryu - are flowing above the danger mark.
Ram Ganga river in Pithoragarh washed away the 70 metre suspension bridge Nachani in Munsiyari block. From the Saraswati Shishu Mandir government school located in the district, nearly 100 students were rescued by the SDRF after they were left stranded.
Nearly four people are reported to be missing after the Ram Ganga river overflowed its banks in Himkhola, Madkot and Harkot villages.
The Ganga river, which flows through Haridwar, is hovering narrowly below the danger mark. As recorded on Wednesday, the river had touched 291.40 metre while the danger level is 294 metre.
