New Delhi, July 27: Incessant rains in several parts of northern India continued to disrupt normal life as the heavy downpour continued for the second day on Friday. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rain has been forecasted over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi today as a stubborn low-pressure area persisted over South Uttar Pradesh.
According to a weather update by private agency Skymet Weather, a low-pressure area lies over North Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Southwest Uttar Pradesh. Thus, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand would witness fairly widespread rain, with heavy rainfall along the foothills of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
In Himachal Pradesh
Several areas in the state experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, causing landslides in some areas. Roads were blocked after all the major rivers and their tributaries were in spate, a Met official said. The heavy downpour also caused massive landslides in Shimla, Kangra, Kullu and Sirmaur districts, hampering vehicular traffic.
The Meteorological department said Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest place in Himachal today after several parts of the state saw continued rains in the last 24 hours.
While Paonta Sahib town in Sirmaur district recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 138 mm, it was 133 mm each in Dharamsala and Kangra, 120 mm in Palampur and 96.3 mm in Nahan. State capital Shimla, which saw a low of 17.1 degrees Celsius, experienced mild rainfall. The water level in the major rivers-- the Satluj, Beas and Yamuna -- which enter the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana has also increased, a government official said.
In Uttarakhand
The hill state has been witnessing heavy rainfall since Wednesday triggering flood-like situations at several places. Earlier this week, the Meteorological (MeT) department had issued a heavy rain alert in the Uttarakhand this week.
Following the MeT department's prediction, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management issued an advisory to all the district magistrates to remain on high alert.
The State Disaster Management has also asked the district magistrates to ensure a high level of precaution, safety and traffic are maintained. Pantnagar recorded 70mm rains, followed by Pithoragarh(50mm), Banbasa (50mm), Haldwani (50mm) and Dharchula (40mm).
In Delhi
Incessant rains in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) since Thursday morning disrupted normal life across the city. Ghaziabad was the worst-affected area with a road in Vasundhara having caved in resulting in a flood-like situation, news agency ANI reported. Traffic was hir after several areas were waterlogged in parts of Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon.
The IMD on Friday said the rain-generating 'low' over South Uttar Pradesh has dropped anchor and would cause widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and East Rajasthan during the next two days. The IMD has also forecasted heavy rains in the north-eastern states, Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and the western parts of India including Konkan, Tamil Nadu, coastal and South interior Karnataka and Kerala.
