Pune, August 5: Once a driver of a six-seater auto-rickshaw, Rahul Jadhav of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become the new mayor of Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation (PCMC) on Saturday. Jadhav has pursued formal education up to matric, and he was an auto-rickshaw driver between 1996 and 2003. Jadhav believes that he can understand the problems of the workers and also promised development of the township.
While speaking to media, Jadhav promised that he would make sure that benefits should reach common people. He also vowed to work for overall development of the township. Sachin Chinchwade of the BJP was elected as the deputy mayor of PCMC. Jadhav entered politics in 2006 and in 2012 he became MNS corporator from Chikhli, He joined BJP in 2017 just before the municipal elections.
Nayana Gunde, the chairperson and managing director of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), conducted the election to the mayor post at the municipal corporation hall on Saturday. Jadhav, who represents ward number two, bagged 80 votes, including six from independent corporators. However, his opponent Vinod Nadhe of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) managed to get only 33 votes.
For the post of deputy mayor, Chinchwade received 79 votes, while NCP’s Vinaya Tapkir received only 32 votes. According to reports, Shiv Sena representatives abstained from the voting process. In the municipal corporation election held in 2017, Chinchwade was elected as a corporator from ward number 17 on BJP’s ticket and now has become the deputy mayor in his very first tenure as a corporator.
