In his statements on the flood situation in Kerala so far, the Congress chief has been targeting the Centre for refraining to declare the calamity as a "natural disaster". He also lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what his party described as a "miniscule" amount of aid from the Centre.
Notably, the Centre has announced financial assistance of Rs 600 crore so far. The state government, however, pegs the losses which it has incurred to the tune of Rs 20,000 crores. "We expect the Centre to at least provide us with an immediate relief of Rs 2,600 crores," said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The death toll in the floods has jumped to 302, whereas, 6 lakh people are still staying in relief camps. Although the flood-affected regions are no longer inundated, houses of a massive section of the displaced population have been washed away.
