New Delhi, July 22: Rahul Gandhi has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Donald Trump's mediation claims. In a tweet on Tuesday, the Congress leader highlighted that the PM should tell the nation what transpired between him and the US President. "If US President Donald Trump's claim that the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate on the Kashmir matter is true, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi had betrayed the interests of the country, said Gandhi. A row has erupted after US President Donald Trump offered to mediate in the Kashmir issue. His remarks have created an uproar not only in India but also in America. Gandhi further asserted that a "weak" foreign ministry denial wouldn't do and Prime Minister Modi must tell the nation what transpired in the meeting between him and the US president. External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Tuesday informed Parliament that Prime Minister Narendra Modi never requested US President Donald Trump to mediate in the Kashmir issue. Jaishankar reiterated New Delhi's consistent stand that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan, and no foreign intervention will be accepted in the matter.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also issued a clarification on US President Donald Trump's claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Trump to mediate on Kashmir issue, saying 'no such request has been made'.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor came out with a statement, where he backed the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was quoted saying, "Trump doesn't know what's he saying. Maybe he didn't understand the issue or nobody briefed him. Impossible that Modi will ask anyone else because it's our clear policy that we don't want a 3rd party mediation. If we've to talk to Pakistan, we'll do that directly."
