New Delhi, December 10: The contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, was passed in the Lok Sabha past midnight on Monday, after witnessing heated arguments in the Lower House.  The highly debated Bill was introduced after a division with 293 members voting in favour of the Bill and 82 against it.

Commenting on the Bill, Rahul Gandhi said, "The CAB is an attack on the Indian constitution. Anyone who supports it is attacking and attempting to destroy the foundation of our nation." Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 to Be Tabled in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday at 2 PM.

The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Under this Bill, Indian citizenship will be provided to people belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities, and those who have come from the three countries to India till December 31, 2014, to put an end to them being treated as illegal immigrants in the country. The CAB will be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday at 2 PM. There have been huge protests in several areas in Assams, with shops and transport shut down thus causing extreme inconvenience to the people in the state.
