Bhind, May 8: Indian National Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that the 'Chowkidar chor hai' slogan was either coined by him or any Congress worker, and attributed the jibe to the farmers and youths. Addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind, Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over fighter jet Rafale deal, claiming that the latter ensured that a "thief", referring to Anil Ambani, got it. ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ Will Remain Our Slogan, Says Rahul Gandhi.
"Mediapersons asked me today about the genesis of the chowkidar chor hai slogan. I told them that while addressing a rally in Chhattisgarh, I said the chowkidar promised two crore jobs to the youth and assured Rs. 15 lakh will be deposited in the bank account of each Indian. "I did not hear it the first time. So I asked (the young men) what did you say? They said 'chor hai'. This slogan was not coined by the Congress, or by Rahul Gandhi, but it is a slogan of the youth, farmers and labourers of India," the Congress president said explaining the story behind 'Chowkidar chor hai' slogan.
The 48-year-old said he would prefer to die rather than making fake promises to the people. Gandhi's remarks come after he tendered an unconditional apology, earlier today, in the Supreme Court for wrongfully attributing to the apex court the 'chowkidar chor hai' remark in the Rafale verdict.
