Last week, Rahul Gandhi filed nomination from Wayanad seat and said he is contesting a seat from South India to give a message of unity. Gandhi's decision to contest from the second seat gained judgments from BJP who said that Congress president is "running away" because he's unsure of his prospect in Amethi.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Smriti Irani lost to Rahul Gandhi but drew attention by reducing Congress bastion's win margin. In the last five years, Irani has repeatedly visited Amethi and launched central government programs like the assault rifle production unit for which the foundation stone was laid by PM Narendra Modi. Amethi will go into polls in phase 5 on May 6, 2019.
