New Delhi, April 30: Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, facing contempt charges, was rapped by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The Gandhi scion's counsel apologised before the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi-led bench, and agreed to file a fresh affidavit submitting his unconditional apology for attributing the "chowkidar chor hai" remark to the apex court.

"I have wrongly attributed to my lord (SC also said that chowkidar chor hai), that was my error," lawyer and senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the bench on behalf of Rahul Gandhi. Rafale Case: SC Asks Centre to File Reply by May 4 on Review Petitions, Posts Matter for Hearing on May 6.

The court has fixed May 6 as the next date of hearing, when Gandhi would be submitting a fresh affidavit of his apology before the bench.

Earlier, on arguing on behalf of petitioner and BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said Gandhi has committed the crime of deliberately and maliciously attributing statements to the top court.

"He (Rahul Gandhi) deliberately put words in the mouth of SC, he has only expressed regret. Law is clear in contempt cases the line starts with unconditional apology," Rohatgi said.

Earlier, the Congress president had issued an apology before the bench after attributing the "chowkidar chor hai" remark to the apex court. However, his apology was described as half-hearted by the BJP, which alleged that Gandhi expressed no remorse for using the Supreme Court to level a false allegation against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
