New Delhi, December 16: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday termed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) as 'weapons of mass polarisation' unleashed by fascists in India. The Congress leader took to micro-blogging site Twitter and took a dig at the Modi government for the roll out of CAB and NRC. Gandhi said the best defence to deal with these dirty weapons is peaceful, non violent Satyagraha."The CAB & NRC are weapons of mass polarisation unleashed by fascists on India. The best defence against these dirty weapons is peaceful, non violent Satyagraha. I stand in solidarity with all those protesting peacefully against the CAB & NRC", Gandhi tweeted.
In the last week, Gandhi said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was an attack on the Indian Constitution and said anyone who is supporting it is destroying the foundation of the country. Taking to Twitter, Gandhi said, "The CAB is an attack on the Indian constitution. Anyone who supports it is attacking and attempting to destroy the foundation of our nation." Apart from Rahul Gandhi, his sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that CAB threatens the freedom for which "our forefathers gave their lifeblood". "Last night at midnight, India’s tryst with bigotry and narrow minded exclusion was confirmed as the CAB was passed in the Lok Sabha. Our forefathers gave their lifeblood for our freedom. In that freedom, is enshrined the right to equality, and the right to freedom of religion", she had tweeted.

Assam has witnessed sporadic violence in the past week. The toll in the ongoing protests against the new citizenship law (CAA) rose to five with two more persons injured in police firing earlier this week succumbing to their injuries. Authorities decided to further relax the day curfew in this capital city amid gradual improvement in the law and order situation. However, the night curfew is set to remain in place till 6 am on Tuesday.
