Lucknow, August 21: In another case of ragging in Uttar Pradesh, nearly 150 medical students were forced to shave their heads and salute their seniors in a college in Etawah district. According to reports, the first-year MBBS students of Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences in Saifai were allegedly forced to tonsure their heads by their seniors and bow in front of them as a mark of respect. The incident has sparked an outrage after its video went viral on social media. In the video, the first-year students are seen walking in a single file with their bags and saluting their seniors as they pass by. Reacting to the disparaging act of ragging, Vice-Chancellor, Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Dr Raj Kumar assured that the cognizance will be taken into the incident and strong action initiated against those involved. "We keep a strict vigil on such activities and we have a separate dean social welfare for students. Further, we have an anti-ragging committee to deal with complaints”. Kumar said.

The Vice-Chancellor said strict action will be taken against those involved. “We have suspended students earlier also. I want to assure juniors that they need not worry," he said. Kumar added saying the University also has a special squad which visits every place in University to keep a check on ragging. He added saying that the students can complain to the anti-ragging committee or even to their wardens.
Many such incidences of ragging have surfaced from different parts of the country. In 2018, according to data released in parliament, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had informed that the number of ragging complaints received from students and varsities had increased from 423 in 2015 to 901 in 2017,
