Srinagar, October 31: After Jammu and Kashmir ceased to exist as a state and become a union territory, the 'Radio Kashmir' has now become a past. Following the birth of Jammu and Kashmir as a new union territory of India, names of government-run radio stations in Jammu, Srinagar and Leh have been renamed as All India Radio - Jammu, All India Radio - Srinagar and All India Radio - Leh, respectively. Radio stations in Jammu and Kashmir will not identify themselves as 'Radio Kashmir'. The identity announcements from these stations have been changed to "All India Radio" or "Akashvani". The changes will come into effect from today. It is a historic Thursday as two new union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh came into being. The UTs will have Lieutenant Governor as the administrator who will be appointed by the President of India.
Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 in August to bifurcate the erstwhile state and abolish its special status. The Bill got President's assent on August 9. According to the Act, the UT of J&K will have a legislature while the UT of Ladakh will have no legislature. The First Schedule to the Constitution, under the heading "THE STATES" shall be deleted and entries from 16 to 29 shall be renumbered as 15 to 28 under the heading "UNION TERRITORIES".
