Bengaluru, August 19: Three bike-borne men are accused of viciously beating a 30-year-old man, a native from the Northeastern state of Sikkim, in Electronics City, after calling him 'Chinese' and harassing him. This happened after the victim tried to clear up misconceptions about his nationality among his tormentors by claiming to be an Indian from Sikkim.
Dinesh Subba, from Rinchenpong in west Sikkim, was assaulted at 3 a.m. on Wednesday when he was returning home after partying with friends, according to his police complaint filed with Electronics City police. Seven months into his job as a waiter at a restaurant in area, Subba now lives in Doddathogur with his wife and three-month-old child.
It was Subba's wedding anniversary on Monday, owing to which one of his friends from Sikkim and one of his coworkers urged him to host a celebration. On Wednesday, after concluding his shift at 11.30 p.m., Subba accompanied the pair to a pub where they partied until 2 am. Outside the pub, the group of three spoke for an hour. Around three in the morning, Subba was strolling close to PCR Garden when two males riding a bike struck him on the head with their fists.
They called me Chinese, Chinese... I gave them the evil eye and told them to stop calling me Chinese since I am Indian. They were informed that I am from west Sikkim. The three continued referring to me as "Chinese," but they eventually departed when I yelled at them, Subba told TOI.
After two minutes, I was walking when I was struck from behind by someone. On the street, I tripped. Three men were riding a bike. They kicked me and used a metal item to hit me in the head and nose, according to Subba, who also speculated that the guys who beat him were the same ones who had earlier dubbed him "Chinese."
After walking up to a grocery, Subba passed out. Subba was awakened by a few security personnel stationed nearby, who informed him that his shirt and bag were missing.
