Hamirpur, September 23: The Election Commission is experimenting Quick Response (QR) enabled voter slips during Hamirpur assembly segment byelection taking place today. The voting for Hamirpur seat is currently underway. The experiment is part of the pilot project launched by the poll-conducting body. Five booths in Hamirpur constituency are using these slips. QR enabled voter slips stores a large amount of data about a particular booth. These bar codes are read by different imaging devices including smartphone cameras. Voters can scan these slips with an internet connection. The details about their booths, including the number of people in the queue and the percentage of voting done will be displayed on the mobile screen, reported India Today. These slips are useful as they can save a lot of time of voters.
The booth-level officer present at a polling-booth will scan the slip from his mobile and send it directly to the presiding officer, who will then scan the code. Thereafter, the voter will be sent inside to cast his vote. After the success of the pilot project, it will be implemented in every state of the country. The Hamirpur assembly seat fell vacant after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ashok Chandel was convicted in a 22-year-old murder case. However, the saffron party has still not expelled Chandel from the party. Bypolls in 11 other assembly seats including Rampur, Jalalpur, Balha, Kanpur, Jaidpur and Lucknow Cantt in the state are due.
