Chandigarh, June 9: Even after more than 76 hours, the rescue operation by NDRF teams continues to save two-year-old Fatehveer Singh, who slipped into a 150-ft deep borewell in Sunam on Thursday. Singh is currently surviving on oxygen being supplied by the rescuers. However, rescuers have not been able to provide him with any juices or food as a jute bag fell on his face covering it. Until the last update, an NDRF personal went inside through a parallel tunnel and it is expected that the child would be rescued in some time.
The report from various agencies states that the borewell is just 9-inch diameter wide and due to this there isn’t enough space for the child to make any movements. Informing more, Dr Manjit Singh, civil surgeon of Sangrur said, as quoted by Indian Express, "We are supplying only oxygen to the child. Supply of glucose or any food item is not possible as the child’s face is covered with a jute bag, which fell in the borewell along with the child." On Thursday, Singh fell into the unused borewell in his father’s field near their house at around 4.00 pm. The opening of the borewell, not been taken in use since 1991, was covered with a jute bag and the boy accidentally stepped on it, adds the daily.
In order to rescue the child, the mother stepped in, but to no avail. The child, stuck currently at around 125 feet deep in the borewell is unable to hold the rope that was sent to rescue. Following this, a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and experts from the Army, assisted by the police, civil authorities, villagers and volunteers from Dera Sacha Sauda were digging a parallel pit to rescue the child.
Till the last report, the rescuers had dug about 90 feet by taking out soil manually. Officials informed that a shaft of 36 inches in diameter was being installed to bring out the child safely. Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori had stated earlier that they have already issued Rs 1 lakh to SDM Sunam from the emergency fund to carry out the rescue operations.
