A fifteen-year-old boy named Science Deep Singh from Punjab has started a campaign to eradicate the drug menace. A resident from the Chakk Sher Wala village in Muktsar district lost his father, grandfather and paternal uncle to alcohol addiction. To make sure that no one else has to face the same fate, he has decided to start a campaign to create an awareness against the ill-effects of liquor and drugs. The little boy's efforts have been recognised by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh who has assured to take care of the cost of his education.
Punjab has not a very great reputation when it comes to the drug addiction and prevalence of drug market. But Science Deep Singh is all confident to create as much as awareness about the issue. His efforts will benefit even his family members as the state government will help his mother to get a proper employment. The tailoring skills of Simranjit Kaur, the boy's mother will be upgraded to enable her of gainful employment. The chief minister has also asked the deputy commissioner to help the elder brother Karamjit find a suitable job.
The boy is dedicating time to make sure his mission is successful. He has been seen the ill effects of the menace very closely. While talking about it to News18 he was quoted, "Drug use was rampant in our village. Around four years ago, two NGOs — Save The Children and Volunteers For Social Justice — came to our school. With their help, I started creating awareness among villagers about the ill effects of drugs." He has heard stories of other youngsters whose lives have been claimed due to drug addiction.
Singh takes out rallies, make posters, organises street plays, make songs to spread the awareness about the menace. He has seen Udta Punjab, the film which heavily addressed the same issue and has sought inspiration from the character of Diljit Dosanjh in the film. He is working with 35 volunteers to spread the message. They collectively inspire the youngsters towards activities like sports and others that will keep them distracted from drugs. "Such activities brought along a huge change not only in my village but also nearby villages of Chakk Chibdan Wali, Gandhara and Nand Garh," said Singh.
He has big dreams to become an engineer and considers the chief minister as a major inspiration. "When Captain Amarinder Singh said he would eradicate drugs from Punjab, it increased my confidence. But one person alone can’t bring change. All of us need to join hands to end this menace," he talked about it. This boy sure has a conviction and a proud aim to follow. To put it best, this guy named Science is sure out to create a history!
