Chandigarh, September 27: In a shocking incident, an old woman in Punjab was arrested for dumping newborn twin girls in a canal on Thursday. The Punjab Police informed that they arrested the woman and her son for allegedly dumping the twins of her daughter in the Bathinda branch of Sirhind Canal. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the woman (daughter of the old woman) named Amandeep Kaur, who is already a mother of two girls aged three and 12 years, gave birth to premature twins at a private hospital in Bathinda on Wednesday. However, unhappy with the girl twins and the premature babies, her mother decided to dump them in the nearby canal.
Amandeep’s mother Malkit Kaur and brother Baljinder Singh have been arrested. A case into the matter has been registered under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code. The incident came to light after a doctor of the hospital registered a complaint. The HT report states that the complainant said that he was on duty at the time of the twins’ birth asked the patient’s family to get the newborns admitted to some other hospital as they were premature. However, the family refused to do so.
The doctor said that Malkit and Baljinder were seen taking the newborns out of hospital saying that they were taking the infants to some other hospital. The next day when the hospital staff asked the family about the newborns, Malkit said they died and were disposed of in the canal. The hospital authorities immediately informed the police about the incident, following which the mother and son were arrested.
