Pune, July 2: In a second such incident in a week, six labourers lost their lives after a portion of a compound wall collapsed on Tuesday following incessant rains during the past 24 hours. The tragic incident took place around 1:15 am in Pune's Ambegaon area where the compound wall of the Sinhagad College campus came down crashing on huts constructed next to the wall. Six trees were uprooted too.
Soon after receiving the information about the collapse, police, along with a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), rushed to the spot. The rescuers recovered six bodies from the debris. Nine persons who were trapped under the debris were also rescued. The authorities said the incident was due to heavy rainfall and poor constriction of the wall, adding that action will be taken against the builder. "Six people have died while three others sustained injuries after a portion of a compound wall of Sinhgad College collapse here. We will take immediate action against the builder and the one who owns the retaining walls. A risk assessment of 287 sites had been done, this site could not be assessed as no permission was taken for it," the District Magistrate was quoted by PTI as saying.
District Collector Naval Kishor Ram termed the incident as "manmade mistake". "This is a manmade mistake as basic rules were not followed in the construction of the wall. Also, the labour camps alongside the walls should not be constructed," he said. This incident comes two days after the Kondhwa wall collapse that claimed 15 lives.
15 persons, including four children, were killed after a retaining wall of Alcon Stylus housing society in Kondwa collapsed on temporary makeshift residences of labourers at an adjacent construction site of SVG Kanchan Group. Following the incident, the police registered an FIR against builders and arrested Vipul Agrawal and Vivek Agrawal.
