Pune, September 30: Crimes against women continue to rise. In a recent incident, a 32-year-old lady was raped by a 26-year-old man who offered to drop her home in the middle of the night while the city was crowded with the Ganpati Visarjan procession last night. On Friday at around 2.45 am, the crime took place in Viman Nagar, Pune.
The accused, a Kharadi native named Dattray Kharat, has been identified as a college student who also works part-time for a small company. Uttar Pradesh Accident Video: Biker Run Over by Truck After Collision With Bull in Greater Noida, Disturbing Video Surfaces.
The victim, a manager at a private company, went out for supper and a drink with her pals at a cafe in Viman Nagar, according to the police. She and her friends got into a fight about whether to pay the Rs 9,500 bill in full or split it. Her friends, however, left the establishment without paying the bill and she ultimately had to pay the amount, reported TOI.
The woman was, however, unable to recall the PIN of her debit card for paying the Rs9,500 bill. This led to a quarrel between her and the eatery manager and other staffers. They took away her two cellphones, PAN card, three debit cards and a headphone before pushing her and her friend out of the eatery," the officer said, citing the complaint. The eatery staffers told her that they would return her belongings after she made the payment. Amid the commotion at the eatery, the tea vendor, who would frequent the facility and was present during the quarrel, offered to drop home the survivor on his motorcycle, the woman told the police in her complaint.
Instead of taking her home, the man took her to a lodge in Kharadi and gave her Aadhaar card details to book a room where he sexually assaulted her, the survivor told police. The tea vendor left the woman in the lodge after threatening her not to disclose the incident. Later, she managed to return to her room, contacted her friend and narrated the incident.
On Friday, the survivor approached the Airport police and lodged a complaint, identifying the suspect. "Based on her information, our team first visited the Vimannagar eatery and verified her statement by examining CCTV footage of the facility. The suspect named was seen in the footage while taking her away on his bike," Sonde said.
Our team then questioned the eatery staffers regarding the man seen in the footage and learnt from them that he runs a tea stall and often visits them. Later, we questioned people around the tea stall who knew the suspect well and got his address. We arrested him from his residence at MHADA colony in Vimannagar on Friday," the officer said. The police produced the suspect before a magisterial court that ordered his custodial remand till October 3. "We will conduct a probe against the eatery manager and a staffer who took away the survivor's belongings," Sonde said.
