Pune, July 30: Late on Sunday night, July 28, in Khed taluka, a 21-year-old woman was discovered lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit and stab wounds to her stomach. The attack was carried out by Aviraj Kharat, a 22-year-old sales executive, following the victim's rejection of his marriage proposal. The brutal incident occurred near her rented accommodation in Ambethan village. Kharat was apprehended within six hours of the crime by a Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch team, who arrested him near Karad on the Pune-Bengaluru highway.
The victim was found by her roommate and other residents outside their shared accommodation in Ambethan village. According to a report by the Times of India, they grew concerned when the woman did not return home after Kharat forcibly took her cell phone and lured her outside to talk privately. Upon discovering her missing and Kharat's suspicious behaviour, the group rushed to the scene and found her lying in a pool of blood with severe injuries. The victim's throat had been slit, and she had been repeatedly stabbed in the stomach. The TOI reported that Kharat had been rejected by the victim when he proposed marriage, which led to a violent confrontation. After the attack, Kharat fled the scene, but within six hours, the Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch team tracked him down. The police had managed to track Kharat using CCTV footage and the registration number of his motorcycle. Despite switching off the victim’s phone, they were able to intercept him near Karad on the Pune-Bengaluru highway. During the chase, Kharat attempted to escape by driving his motorcycle at a constable, who sustained minor injuries before Kharat was subdued and arrested. The police charged Kharat with murder and criminal intimidation under sections 103(1) and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The victim, who had recently completed her apprenticeship and joined a new firm, was rushed to a private hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
