Pune, October 15: Doctors at a government hospital in Maharashtra's Pune successfully operated a 90-year-old man and removed a 6.5kg cancerous tumour from the patient's abdomen. The successful surgery took place at the PCMC-run Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital, where doctors managed to remove the cancerous tumour, which is said to be the size of a watermelon. Notably, the 6.5kg cancerous tumour was removed from the man's abdomen.
Patient Suffering From Dull Abdomen Pain
According to a report in the Times of India, surgery was conducted on Tuesday, October 10 and spanned for nearly five hours. The 90-year-old patient from Chakan was reportedly suffering from dull abdomen pain for the past six months. Post the surgery, the patient was kept in the ICU for observation and is expected to be discharged by tomorrow, October 16. A doctor from the hospital said that the patient approached them after learning about the exorbitant cost of treatment at private hospitals. 'Watermelon' Size Tumour in Abdomen
On October 4, a week before the surgery, the patient was admitted to the hospital, where he underwent multiple medical tests and scans. The reports of the tests showed that the man was diagnosed with a massive cancerous tumour in his abdomen. The tumour was impacting the patient's functioning of his right kidney. After consulting the patient's relatives, the doctors went ahead with the surgery.
"The patient is stable now and admitted in the general ward. He is on liquid diet and mobile. All his vitals are stable. His kidney is working fine too now. For the first time, this kind of complex surgery has been performed successfully at YCMH," Dr Santosh Thorat, head of surgery of the hospital said. The surgery was done in such a way that there was no harm to the patient's right kidney.
