Pune Rains: Severe Flood Warning for Baramati City After 85000 Cusecs of Water Discharged From Nazare Dam

In its weather bulletin, IMD Mumbai stated that severe floods are likely in Baramati city as water has been discharged from Nazare Dam. The district Administration has been alerted in this regard.

Pune, September 26: In the wake of the heavy rainfall in Saswad region of Pune in Maharashtra, 85000 cusecs of water has been discharged from Nazare Dam. In its weather bulletin, IMD Mumbai stated that severe floods are likely in Baramati city as water has been discharged from the dam, which is located on the Karha river near Jejuri. The district Administration has been alerted in this regard and alert has been sounded in the region. Nearly 11 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidences across the city till now, Maharashtra: Total 11 deaths have been reported in Pune district due to heavy rain till now. Out of the 11 dead, 8 bodies have been recovered in city area while 3 bodies are recovered in Khed Shivapur.

Pune District Collector Naval Kishore Ram declared a holiday on Thursday in all schools and colleges of Pune city, Purandar, Baramati, Bhor and Haveli tehsil of Pune district following heavy rain in the region. The District Collector informed that about 14,000 people are being shifted to safer places in Baramati area due to prevailing situation in the area following heavy rainfall and release of the water from dams.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief and said he is pained to know about the loss of lives in and around Pune due to heavy rains. "My deepest condolences to the families. We are providing all possible assistance needed" he said. Fadnavis said that the state disaster management officials and control room are in continuous touch with Pune collector and Municipal Corporation.

In the wake of the current situation, two NDRF teams are deployed in Pune and two in Baramati. One more NDRF team is on way to Baramati. State Govt is also closely monitoring the dam discharge. According to a latest update by the Pune District Administration, the death toll in a wall collapse incident near Tangewala Aranyeshwar Colony, Sahakar Nagar has jumped to 6. The wall collapsed due to sudden flow of water from upstream with full force. Almost 150 houses have been damaged, officials informed.
