Pune, January 12: During a spa raid in the commercially bustling area of Viman Nagar, Avenue II, the Pune police ended up busting a high-profile sex racket. Four Thai women, who were trafficked into flesh trade, were rescued by the police and sent to protection centres. Nearly Rs 6,000 in cash, mobile phones and SIM cards were also seized in the raid.
The sex racket was primarily being operated by two key accused - 27-year-old Bantikumar Kantibhai Patel and his 24-year-old female aide, who is a native of Nagaland. The duo have been booked under IPC sections 370 (trafficking women for the purpose of sexual exploitation) and 370 A (exploiting the trafficked person), said an official privy to the probe. A further inquiry by the police revealed that the Thai women - all aged between 31 and 41 - were trafficked to Pune on the pretext of providing them a job through which they could earn upto Rs 50,000 a month.
After bringing them here, however, the victims were forced into flesh trade. The Foreign Regional Office (FRO) has been informed by the Pune police, which will take further steps to send the women back to Thailand.
The fresh raid has been linked with similar crackdowns launched by the Pune police in the last six months. At least 40 Thai women have been rescued in raids at massage parlours based in Chatushrungi, Baner, Sinhagad Road, and Sanghvi.
