Pune, June 16: A Mumbai-based doctor discovered a human finger in Yummo's butterscotch ice cream cone, prompting the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take swift action. Acting on the doctor's complaint, FSSAI swiftly raided Fortune Dairy Industries' manufacturing unit in Indapur taluka, where the ice cream was manufactured as a third-party product. After the raid on Saturday morning, FSSAI ordered Fortune Dairy to cease operations at its manufacturing centre.
The facility is located approximately 130 kilometres from Pune city in the Loni Deokar area of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, now stands abandoned, as reported by the Lokmat Times. The unsettling incident unfolded when the 26-year-old Mumbai-based doctor Brandon Ferrao encountered the human finger while consuming a Yummo’s butterscotch ice cream ordered via the Zepto delivery app. This led to Ferrao filing a complaint at the Malad police station, triggering a broader investigation into the supply chain integrity from delivery executives to the manufacturer. Fortune Dairy Industries, situated approximately 130 kilometers from Pune city in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) cluster of Loni Deokar, appeared abandoned as operations were suspended per FSSAI orders. Walko QSR Company Pvt Ltd, the parent company, clarified in a statement that specific ice cream batches were manufactured by Fortune Dairy Industries at their MIDC Indapur plant. The Mumbai police, overseeing the investigation, visited Fortune Dairy Industries on Saturday to gather further evidence, as reported by the Indian Express. Despite extensive inspections, they found no reports of injuries or missing fingers among workers at the facility. Meanwhile, local authorities in Pune, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), took precautionary measures by inspecting an ice cream manufacturing facility owned by Walko in Hadapsar, Pune, to ensure product and raw material safety following the Mumbai incident.
The ramifications of this discovery have cast uncertainty over hundreds of workers and milk suppliers associated with Fortune Dairy Industries, which primarily deals in butter and skimmed milk powders but expanded into ice cream production recently.
