Pune, September 27: On account of the heavy rains lashing the city, schools and colleges have been declared holiday for the second consecutive day on Friday. According to an ANI tweet, Naval Kishore Ram, Pune District Collector has declared holiday for schools and colleges in Pune city, Purandar, Baramati, Bhor and Haveli tehsil in view of heavy rains in the region.

Schools and colleges were declared to be shut on Thursday as well, however, most of them had opened due to the late notice. 18 people have already died in the tragedy after intense rainfall of 100 mm lashed the city in a four hour period on Wednesday night. Reportedly, more than 800 animals, including cattle in local dairies were also killed. Around 2,000 vehicles on the roads and parking lots were found submerged in the waterlogged areas of south Pune. Three teams of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) have been deployed for flood rescue operations in Pune - one team each at Katraj, Baramati and near Corporation office. Owing to the heavy spell of rain, a wall collapsed in Katraj on Wednesday night. There have been waterlogging in several areas causing extreme inconvenience to people.

According to a Times of India report, Pune will continue to get heavy rainfall in the next couple of days. After which, the intensity is believed to be reduced.
