Pune, September 26: Heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in Pune region in Maharashtra on Thursday with several low-lying areas flooded across the city after heavy showers. According to a tweet by ANI, the Pune Rural Police informed that five people have been washed away near Khed Shivapur area in Pune as the level of water of nullah increased due to torrential rains over the last few days. Due to very heavy rainfall at Saswad, 85000 cusecs of water has been discharged from Nazare Dam which will cause very severe floods in Baramati city. The District Administration has been alerted and precautionary measures have been taken. Several rain-related incidences have been reported from Pune as the city has been witnessing heavy rainfall since the past few days. Nearly seven people have lost their lives in separate incidents after incessant rainfall led to flooding and wall collapse in different areas. Chief fire officer Prashant Ranpise was quoted by ANI saying that five people, including a nine-year-old boy, were killed in wall collapse incidents on Wednesday night in Arneshwar area.
In a latest update by ANI, Pune District Administration informed that the death toll rises to 6 in an incident of wall collapse near Tangewala Aranyeshwar Colony, Sahakar Nagar. Over 150 houses have been damaged due to sudden flow of water from upstream with full force.
In the wake of the heavy rainfall Pune District Collector Naval Kishore Ram had declared holiday on Thursday for all schools and colleges in the city including Purandar, Baramati, Bhor and Haveli tehsil. In its weather bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the intensity of showers may reduce a bit, but the city is likely to experience thunder and rainfall in the next couple of days.
