Pune, October 1: In a pioneering medical advancement, doctors at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Pune employed a groundbreaking technique known as Orbital-tripsy to treat an elderly patient suffering from severe coronary artery blockage. This innovative procedure combines orbital atherectomy, which clears plaque buildup, with shockwave intravascular lithotripsy, using sonic pressure to break down hardened calcium deposits in the arteries.

By using this advanced method, the medical team was able to address a 90 per cent stenosis in the left main artery, significantly improving blood flow to the heart and enabling the safe placement of a stent. According to a report by the Times of India, the patient, who had a history of diabetes and hypertension, was admitted with chest pain and was discharged just 36 hours after the minimally invasive angioplasty. Rat Menace at Sassoon Hospital: Young Patient Dies Due to Rat Bite in ICU in Pune.

What is Orbital-Tripsy?

Orbital-tripsy is a novel procedure that merges two advanced techniques: orbital atherectomy and shockwave intravascular lithotripsy. Orbital atherectomy involves using a specialised device to remove built-up plaque in the arteries, while shockwave intravascular lithotripsy employs sonic pressure to crack and break down calcium deposits that impede blood flow. By combining these methods, doctors can effectively expand narrowed arteries, making it easier to place a stent. Blood Transfusion Error: Two Patients in Critical Condition After Receiving Wrong Blood Types at Pune's Aundh District Hospital, Probe Underway.

This minimally invasive procedure not only improves immediate blood flow but also significantly reduces recovery times compared to traditional surgical interventions. The successful operation was led by an expert team, including Dr Rajesh Badani and Dr Annapoorna Kalia, who meticulously planned and executed the procedure to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient.
