Pune, June 9: The Pune police recently arrested two people for running an alleged sex determination racket in the city. Police officials said that one of the arrested accused is a suspended government medical officer. Cops said that the accused were operating their sex determination racket from an under-construction building at Malegaon Budruk village in Baramati.

The arrested accused are Dr Madhukar Chandrakant Shinde (52) and his aide Nitin Balasoa Ghule (34). According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the alleged incident occurred on Friday, June 7, when Yuvraj Ghodake, assistant inspector of Baramati Police Station, alerted the health department officials. The police, along with Dr Mahesh Jagtap, medical superintendent of Baramati sub-district hospital, reached the spot and arrested the accused. Officials said that the accused were caught red-handed with a portable ultrasound machine and a surgical robe. The police said they arrested Dr Shinde and Ghule on a complaint by Dr Jagtap.

Both accused have been booked under various sections of the PCPNDT Act 1994 and Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Cops also said that they would be arresting one more accused soon and would investigate whether any more people were involved in the racket. Back then, an investigation discovered that Dr Shinde was involved in carrying out prenatal sex determination tests. Multiple cases of Pre-conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act (PCPNDT) have been registered against Dr Shinde Yavat, Wadgaon Nimbalkar, Daund and Phaltan.
