According to reports, taking into consideration the United States’ Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) against Russia, India could make payments for the ships using the rupee-rouble route. India already operates six of the Talwar-class frigates. The first three warships of this class were inducted between June 2003 and April 2004, while the next group of three warships was inducted between April 2012 and June 2013.

Earlier, in October, India also signed $5.2 billion deal with Russia to procure S-400 Triumf advanced air defence system. The deal was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India to attend the 19th India-Russia Annual Bilateral Summit. Reports suggest that India will get the first deliveries of S-400 air defence system within two years. Reacting to the deal, the United States President Donald Trump said that India would soon find out if the punitive CAATSA sanctions apply to it or not. The CAATSA was enacted by the US to punish Russia for meddling in 2016 presidential elections. The law also threatens sanctions against third countries for having any security and intelligence relations with Russia.
