Dibrugarh (Assam), December 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated India’s longest and Asia’s second longest railroad bridge – Bogibeel Bridge – in Dibrugarh of Assam. PM Modi also walked on the bridge and waved hands at the express train which stood beside the bridge. He also inspected the bridge and stated that this is a milestone in the development of the nation.

The 4.94-kilometre long bridge has been constructed with an estimated cost of Rs 5,900 crore. Though former PM HD Deve Gowda layed the foundation stone of the double-decker bridge on January 22, 1997, the work commenced on April 21, 2002, under the previous NDA government.

The two-track rail bridge will decrease the travel time between Delhi and Dibrugarh by three hours and the journey from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to Assam would reduce by four hours. This is the fourth bridge on Brahmaputra river.

The bridge is the first one in the country which has adhered to the European welding standards and has a serviceable period of 120 years. The bridge consists of 39 girders of 125 metre and two girders of the 33-metre span. For the railway tracks the girders have steel floor system, and for the three-lane road, concrete has been used – considered to have been constructed for the first time in the country.

The Bridge consists of two railway tracks and three lanes for road transportation; this is the longest railroad bridge which bet Vembanad Rail Bridge in Kerala (4.62-km).
